An oblique pen holder is almost a mandatory tool for calligraphers working in slanted scripts like Spencerian and Copperplate, because it holds the dip pen nib at a 55 angle just as these 19th-century writing systems require. Oblique holders are also commonly used by left-handed writers, who can use the pen’s angled tip to avoid dragging their hands through wet ink.

This well-balanced wooden oblique holder from German nibmaker Brause is a nice balance between build quality and affordability. Simple in construction, with a folded metal nib mount and a solid wood handle, it delivers a great writing experience and includes no plastic components.

A dip pen nib is not included. (We have a large selection, if you’re interested…)
